Everyone looks for the quick fix for all aspects of life, so could there also be fixes for your health? Most people, including doctors, would say consistent, small changes to everyday life make a huge difference. The five steps listed below are a great starting point:
1. Water:
Daily, you should be consuming enough ounces to equal the number of half of your body weight in pounds. So, why do we need to drink so much water? Well, your body is basically a fluid mosaic. Think of each cell, tissue, and organ linked together with little canals of fluid cushioning them, and of course, that fluid is mostly comprised of water. Then, let’s break down just how important water is to your main organs like the brain, heart, lungs, and skin: “the brain and heart are composed of 73% water, and the lungs are about 83% water. The skin contains 64% water.”1 Needless to say, your body will thank you for drinking more water.
2. Exercise:
Again exercising is an obvious step for weight management and muscle building. Start small to ensure you do not get burned out and quit exercising altogether. Add walking for 10 minutes a day into your routine. If you have a desk job, try some exercises you can do while working2, or even just try stretching at the end of the day!
3. Eat healthier:
Could we get any more overt about how to get healthy? Have you ever heard the saying “you are what you eat”? Well, as cliché as it is, it has some truth to it. “The nutritional content of what we eat determines the composition of our cell membranes, bone marrow, blood, and hormones. Consider that the average adult loses roughly 300 billion cells to old age every day and must replace them. Our bodies are literally manufactured out of the food we consume” (Katz, 2010). Be aware of what you put into your body!
4. Sleep:
Sleep is vital to reset your body. Make sure you are creating a healthy sleep pattern and sticking to it to ensure your body gets a full charge every night3.
5. Manage stress:
Stress can be good for your body, but too much of it can wreak havoc on your emotional stability as well as your physical body. Find a healthy way to manage your stress and stick with it4.
