Gratitude means thankfulness. It is defined by the Merriam-Webster dictionary as “the state of being grateful, thankfulness.”  Gratitude is usually shown to someone or a group of people for an act of kindness rendered. It is also expressed when something has been accomplished or achieved. Gratitude makes people happier and more resilient, it strengthens relationships, it improves health and well-being, and it reduces stress.

There are a lot of ways to show gratitude, and it is important to be genuine regarding the things for which you are thankful. Let the people in your life know just how much you appreciate them each and every day.

Express Your Gratitude in Person

When a friend, colleague or family member commits an act of kindness, be sure to verbalize your appreciation. Go to their home or office, treat them to lunch, or invite them to dinner or even a quick cup of coffee. Make it a point to interact with others as much as possible. When you make time for those who are important to you, the lasting impression left can be endlessly rewarding.

Keep a Gratitude Journal

Make a list of things for which you are grateful each day. You can add to it first thing in the morning or before going to bed at night. You can jot one or two positive experiences or write what you’re grateful for at the end of each week. It is important to write them so that these small moments of joy are not forgotten. When you keep a gratitude journal, you can look back and remember how many blessings you have in your life.

Share an Uplifting Story

When someone has helped to improve or contribute positively to your development, be sure to tell them a story outlining the positive impact it had on your life. Share a specific example of something they did for you and how it made a difference in your life.

Write a Thank You Note

When you receive an act of kindness, a gift or help, you can hand write a thank you note that mentions the gift received or help rendered to you and your appreciation.  Let someone know how much their actions mean to you both now and for the future.

Always Say “Thank You”

In showing gratitude, no matter how small or how big the favor was, always say “Thank you.” Say it to family, friends, colleague, and loved ones. A heartfelt thank you can go a long way because everyone appreciates a genuine “Thank you.”

At the heart of it, gratitude, in particular, enables us to see people with the deepest appreciation for the things they’ve done, help rendered, gifts, and support given to us. All these come with praise, affection, and high regard for the other individual. There is no doubt that a sincere gratitude makes the world a happier place and reminds us just how blessed we are.
